Fridge freezer buying guide

Capacity
Capacity is given in litres. Many households of two to three people manage with around 250 to 350 litres in total, while larger families or those who shop in bulk often prefer more. American style models are larger still.
Type
Freestanding models stand on their own. Integrated models are fitted behind a cabinet door, so check the niche size. American style, side by side and multi door models are wide and often need space for the doors to open, and some have a water or ice dispenser that needs a plumbed supply.
Frost free
Frost free models prevent ice building up, so there is no need to defrost by hand.
Energy rating
Energy labels run from A (most efficient) to G. A fridge freezer runs all day, every day, so the rating affects running costs.
Size and fit
Measure the space, allowing room for ventilation and for the doors to open fully. Also measure the doorway, hallway and any tight turns on the way in. Each of our fridge freezer pages has a "Will it fit?" checklist.
