Washing machine buying guide
A quick guide to choosing a washing machine that suits your home. If you would rather talk it through, message us on WhatsApp and we will help.
Capacity
Capacity is the dry weight of washing the drum can hold in one cycle. As a rough guide, 7 to 8kg suits one or two people, 9 to 10kg suits a family of three or four, and 10kg or more suits larger households or regular bulky items such as duvets.
Spin speed
A higher spin speed removes more water, so clothes come out drier and dry faster. Most people are well served by 1200 to 1400rpm.
Energy rating
Energy labels run from A (most efficient) to G. Comparing the label is the easiest way to compare running costs between models.
Size and fit
Most washing machines are around 60cm wide and 85cm high, but depth varies by several centimetres between models. Measure the space, the doorway and any tight turns on the way in, and check which way the door opens. Each of our washing machine pages has a "Will it fit?" checklist.
Washer dryer or separate machines?
A washer dryer saves space when you only have room for one appliance. Its dry capacity is usually smaller than its wash capacity, so check both figures.
Delivery and installation
On many large appliances you can add installation and recycling of your old appliance when you order.
